Top 5: 90s Fashion Do’s and Don’ts

February 7, 2010

Top 5 is back baby! And to fully immerse you in my current 90s fashion obsession I’ve put together a little list of things to embrace and things that still belong in the past…

Dos:

1: Sheer

Everyone, including your grandmother, is having a love affair with sheer at the moment, but remember to keep it clean ladies! Visible nips are for fashion editorials, not for work…

2: Florals

Florals come around each spring, but this spring promises an explosion of flower prints on just about everything. If you want to go hardcore 90s, how about some floral dungarees or Doc Martens?

3: Double Denim

Double denim has been a double no-no for the last decade, but now that the 90s are vintage, double denim is mainstream again. Even the designers are up to it. Just try to avoid the Justin and Britney look. Sometimes quadruple denim is just too much.

4: Shoes

Fashion loves a clunky heel at the moment, but the 90s grunge trend also has a big impact on footwear at the moment with worker boots and yellow boots making a big comeback.

5: Minis and Maxis

Tubeskirts were big in the 90s, both mini and maxi versions. The Mini is looking like a huge trend for summer, but for us more shy and retiring folks, the maxi is slowly creeping back in too…

Don’ts:

1: Bumbags

We all know just how wrong this really is…

2: Tubesocks

They don’t even deserve a photo. If you don’t know what they look like, you’re lucky.

3: Scrunchies

Never was, never will be cool. Not even on figure skaters, not even on miniature dogs.

4: Tribal Tattoos

Tribal tattoos are like bad smells – hard to get rid of, and offensive to anyone in your vicinity. If you have one, you’re shafted. If you haven’t, bless your lucky socks for not jumping on that train back in the 90s.

5: Spaghetti Straps

Loved by everyone from Whigfield to Sporty Spice, spaghetti straps make you look wide and like Whigfield or Sporty Spice. So leave it alone.

It really is a shame that bumbags haven’t found some kind of fashionable iteration… because as far as practicality goes, they are perhaps the most useful bags in existence, less hampering than anything with handles or shoulder straps, and more accessible (and less thief-tempting) than backpacks. Especially since women’s clothes persist in lacking usable pockets.
